PRESS RELEASE - CHEN LEADS BY ONE
For Immediate Release: Tuesday 25th April 2006 - Asian Seniors Tour Communications
Phuket (March 25, 2006): At 55, Chen Tsang Te is among the youngest of the 170 senior players taking part in the ongoing US$100,000 Phuket Asian Senior Masters 2006. Today, in the first round of the competition, Chen, from Shanghai, took advantage of his young status in the senior ranks to take a one-stroke lead at the serene Phuket Country Club.
Playing defensively to avoid unforced errors, Chen posted seven birdies against two bogeys to sign out with a 5-under 67. “I had a good day with various clubs I’ve used. The weather was superb, hot with the gentle breeze giving me a little comfort. So, I played well, hit the ball good and did not make many mistakes except for one or two missed putts that prevented me from getting a better score,” said Chen.
Another Chinese player Chang Chin Kuo and Australia’s John Clifford were tied on second spot after both recorded identical 4-under total of 68’s.
“I played relatively well. The course was in a fine condition. I was hitting a lot of good shots,” said Clifford, the 2004 Australian Senior PGA champion. The Aussie posted six birdies against two bogeys. Chang too had identical birdies and bogeys. “It was hot out there but the winds were affecting my game. I took good control of my game and is happy to have finished well,” said Chang.
The USA’s Don Kleng and China’s Chun Chun Hsing shared the fourth spot with three-under total while early favourite Stewart Ginn of Malaysia finished the day with a two-over 74 to share the 27th spot.
On sixth place was another player from China Shen Chung Syung, with 2-under 70 while Malaysia’s M. Ramayah shared seventh spot with three other players.
